They are made every 30cm along the ridge pointing. These holes allow water to escape. As a result, the ridge point stays dry. It is crucial that ridge pointing remains dry because the bedding holding this part of the roof together is cement. Cement, although strong, is porous, which means it has lots of little holes in it, allowing water to soak in. When water soaks into the concrete, it accumulates and results in cracking and other issues. The Australian Building Code states: “Australian Standards 3700 – 2011 Section 4.7. 2: Weep holes shall be provided wherever it is necessary to drain moisture from or through masonry construction. | What are roof ridge caps? | Roof ridge caps are the covers that sit at the very top of the roof, where two sides meet to form the roof ridge. They provide a protective barrier against the elements by sealing off the gap between the two sides of the roof, preventing water, debris, and pests from entering. They also help to keep the roof structurally sound by protecting the roof tiles or metal sheets from lifting and potentially causing damage. Roof ridge caps can be made from a range of materials, depending on the type of roofing system being used. | What is re-bedding? | Roof bedding is a cement mortar that holds your roof tiles in place. Roof pointing is a flexible material that goes over the bedding and seals the ridge cap to the tile – it keeps water and other substances out of your roof, ceiling and home. Over time, roof bedding and pointing are subject to natural wear. | What is pointing? | Roof Pointing is a second layer which goes over the top of the roof bedding. This helps create a stronger hold for the roof tiles. And seal the roof against water and dust. Traditionally cement mortar was used for roof pointing. But in recent times flexible pointing compounds have been used. | How many coats of paint do you apply? | 1 x one x primer/sealer coat along with 2 x colour coats. | |
